Frankincense – Boswellia Sacra “Royal Hojari”

from $25.00

Imported directly from Oman, where the world’s finest frankincense is grown. This aromatic resin is obtained from the bark of the frankincense tree (genus Boswellia) which is locally known in Oman as “Luban”. The most valuable grade known as “Hojari” comes from a narrow, dry micro-climate belt of the Dhofar mountains. The value of frankincense is determined by its colour, clump size and oil concentration.

We offer Grade A Royal Green/White and Grade B Yellow/Gold tears of this precious resin.

Considered the premier Frankincense of Oman, Royal Green Hojari is indeed a particularly beautiful and fragrant resin. Traditionally reserved for medicine, high-end incense and tea, these succulent pieces share a green cast and a delightful sweet citrus scent. Green Royal Hojari is highly valued in traditional Arabian folk-medicine.

Frankincense is the sap of the Boswellia tree and is both a resin and a gum. The fragrance is uplifting, fresh and green with hints of eucalyptus.

Traditionally, it is burnt on charcoal pucks. Burning frankincense as an incense promotes a sense of calm and comfort. It helps with mental clarity, focus and awareness. Many cultures, including the Tibetans and Indians, have used Frankincense as an aid in meditation and ceremony. Across so many cultures and times, it has functioned to promote mental clarity and a sustainable sense of wellbeing.

Also known as the True or Frank incense, it has one of the richest histories of incense and fragrance in the world. It has been part of mankind’s life for thousands of years and was once considered more precious than gold. Versatile, it has been used over the centuries to treat ailments and ensure wellbeing. Since Biblical times, frankincense has been used extensively for its anti-bacterial, infection and virus killing properties.

Grown predominantly in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, the trees range from 2 metres to 7 metres tall. The sap is gathered from incisions made in the tree’s trunk and branches. Dried gum is harvested only when it has hardened and settled into a state that is known as “tears”. The highest grade of frankincense is translucent green or white and is known as “Royal Hojari”. It was originally grown for the Sultans of Oman, Nobility and those of high rank.

Well known in Ancient Egypt, it was extensively used for cosmetics, perfumery, embalming and burial ceremonies. It was also a key ingredient in the famous Kyphi used by Egyptian priests. Kyphi was not used as a perfume but as an incense blend to burn in the temples. It was valued at such high importance that the Egyptians carved the recipe into the temple walls so that it may be preserved and kept at its most authentic state.

How to burn frankincense resin on charcoal - Light your charcoal puck, holding it carefully on one end with fingers or tongs. You will need to put it into something that will take the heat.

Once it’s ashed over and gone grey, drop a small tear of frankincense on it. You don't need much of the resin to create a lot of smoke and scent. A tiny piece of resin, not much bigger than a grain of rice, will do to begin with. You can always burn more when it stops smoking. The charcoal puck will normally burn for 35-45 mins.
